Herbal Studies Program

Rooted in Herbalism

A Nine-Month Apprenticeship with Bridget Giuffrida

There comes a moment when curiosity is no longer enough.

You’ve taken a class. Read the books. Made a few remedies. You feel the pull of the plants — but you want depth. You want confidence. You want to truly understand what you’re doing and why.

This program was created for that moment.

Rooted in Herbalism is a nine-month, in-person apprenticeship designed to move you beyond inspiration and into embodied knowledge. From March through November, we gather in the Santa Cruz Mountains and follow the arc of the growing season, learning directly from the plants as they emerge, flourish, and return to the earth.

This is how herbalism is meant to be learned.

What Makes This Different

I do not teach herbalism as information alone. I teach it as relationship. You will not simply memorize herbs. You will know them.

Through guided study, medicine-making, and seasonal immersion, you will develop:

  • Confidence in selecting and formulating remedies
  • A working understanding of plant energetics
  • Practical anatomy and physiology relevant to herbal application
  • Skills in crafting tinctures, teas, oils, salves, syrups, vinegars, and fermented preparations
  • Direct plant identification experience in the field
  • A deeper trust in your own observations and intuition

By the end of this apprenticeship, you will not be guessing. You will be grounded.

What We Study

Each month builds thoughtfully upon the last. Our curriculum includes:

  • History and lineage of herbal medicine
  • Foundational energetics and constitutional understanding
  • In-depth materia medica studies
  • Nervous system and stress support
  • Digestive, liver, and kidney health
  • Women’s health and reproductive support
  • Flower essences
  • Fungal allies and mycology
  • Fermentation and traditional preparations
  • Introduction to Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic perspectives
  • Herbal formulation and clinical considerations

This is structured, immersive education — not scattered information.

Field Study & Seasonal Immersion

Plants are best understood in their natural environment.

Throughout the program, we extend our learning into the field with visits to:

  • Flower farms from Pescadero through Carmel Valley
  • Organic herb farms and growing operations
  • Pacific Botanicals in Grants Pass, Oregon
  • Asilomar Beach for coastal plant and seaweed study
  • Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park for plant identification and ecology

These experiences deepen your understanding of cultivation, harvesting, habitat, and stewardship. Herbalism is not separate from the land — and neither is this program.

Mentorship & Community

A core part of this apprenticeship is mentorship. I teach in an intimate setting so that each student is seen, supported, and challenged appropriately. You will have direct access to my guidance, years of clinical and practical experience, and the lived wisdom that comes from working with plants season after season. Just as important, you will build meaningful relationships with fellow students — people who care deeply about plants, health, and living in rhythm with nature. Many of my past apprentices describe this program as life-shifting, not simply educational.

Who This Program Is For

This apprenticeship is for you if:

  • You are ready to move beyond introductory herbal knowledge
  • You want structure, depth, and accountability
  • You feel called to integrate plant medicine into your life or professional path
  • You are willing to show up consistently and do the work

  1. Best hands on class 5 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Mar 2025

This herbal studies program with Bridget was amazing. Just like many of her other courses offered! The amount of time spent learning in class with hands on creations was something I always looked forward to. The field trips were definitely a treat.
Learning the many ways in which plants all around us, even in our own kitchens can be incredibly beneficial to our lives.
Bridget is an amazing teacher of the plants. And just an incredible person all around!
I am incredibly grateful to have been apart of this program and highly recommend those seeking to learn more in herbalism to connect with Bridget and join her classes.

  2. I loved this program 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Nov 2024

I was taking an herbal program online and I couldn’t seem to get myself to commit to it every day or find time and also wasn’t confident that I was doing anything correct. This program was perfect for me because I had an awesome guide and I was confident in what I was doing because I had someone right there who has the knowledge and experience with herbs. Bridget is a great teacher who is open and patient with her students. She is not only a teacher but a friend. The atmosphere is relaxed and calming. Bridget’s love for herbs shows in her teaching. The trips were amazing and I learned how to look around me and recognize the herbs growing right in my yard and as I walked around town. I would recommend this program to anyone who has an interest in how herbs can help in your everyday life. And she is an amazing cook.

  3. An amazing hands on course for the curious herbalists 5 Star Review

Posted by on 22nd Oct 2024

Being apart of the first year herbal studies was amazing. It was fun, informational and the hands on work we did really brought this class to life. Learning while creating with Bridget was the best. I enjoyed the flow of the classroom and energy of the space in which classes are held. The field trips were always a great time as well. I would definitely recommend others to sign up if becoming familiar with herbs is on your radar and you’re looking for a hands on course.
